General Information

In 1977, the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) was implemented system-wide through all the CSU campuses to ensure that graduating students possess writing capability at the university level. Major changes to the WST (Please see WST Information webpage for more information)

For Undergraduates Students: All students must pass both the WST and 100W course in order to satisfy the GWAR. All students are required to complete the GWAR prior to graduation unless satisfaction has been achieved through other approved provisions.

For incoming Fall 2014, registration for the WST requires completion of an English 1A course (GE Area A2) and a critical thinking course (GE Area A3) with a "C" or better-- ("C minus" not accepted)

For students who are have enrolled at SJSU prior to Fall 2014 must take English 1A ad English 1B or equivalent courses as a prerequisite for the WST.

For Graduate Students: All graduate students are required to demonstrate competency in written English as a requirement for graduation. SJSU policy requires that English competency be a requirement for advancement to graduate candidacy

Currently, the testing fee of $38.00 and the late registration fee of $15.00 are non-refundable. Fees are subject to change.

Effective January 2015, under the recommendation of the Writing Requirements Committee and in order to help students advance towards graduation by speeding up the delivery of scores to SJSU students, San Jose State University will no longer use the multiple choice section for the Writing Skills Test. The WST will not consist of an essay exam only.

Prior to January 2015, an attempt for the WST is completion of both test parts. After January 2015, an attempt for the WST is completion of just the essay.
