General Information

In 1977, the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) was implemented system-wide through all the CSU campuses to evaluate university level writing skills. Major changes to the WST are listed below (Please see WST Information webpage for more information)

For Undergraduate Students: All students must pass both the WST and 100W course in order to satisfy the GWAR. All students are required to complete the GWAR prior to graduation unless the requirement has been met through other approved provisions.

After Fall 2014, Registration for the WST requires completion of an English 1A course (GE Area A2) or second semester Humanities Honors Program course with a "C" or better. (A "C minus" not accepted.) It is strongly recommended the completion of a second semester composition course. (Area A3 courses or English 1B at SJSU.)

For students enrolled at SJSU prior to Fall 2014 must take English 1A and English 1B or equivalent course as a prerequisite for the WST.

For Graduate Students: All graduate students are required to demonstrate competency in written English as a requirement for graduation. SJSU policy requires that English competency be a requirement for advancement to graduate candidacy

The testing fee of $38.00 and the late registration fee of $15.00 are non-refundable. Fees are subject to change.

Effective January 2015, under the recommendation of the Writing Requirements Committee and in order to help students advance towards graduation by speeding up the delivery of scores to SJSU students, San Jose State University will no longer use the multiple choice section for the Writing Skills Test. The WST will consist of an essay exam only.

Prior to January 2015, an attempt for the WST is completion of both test parts. After January 2015, an attempt for the WST is completion of just the essay.
