WST

General Information

In 1977, the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) was implemented system-wide through all the CSU campuses to ensure that graduating students possess writing capability at the university level.

For Undergraduates Students: All students must pass both the WST and 100W course in order to satisfy the GWAR. All students are required to complete the GWAR prior to graduation unless satisfaction has been achieved through other approved provisions. English 1A and 1B or other equivalent courses are prerequisites for this test.

For Graduate Students: All graduate students are required to demonstrate competency in written English as a requirement for graduation. SJSU policy requires that English competency be a requirement for advancement to graduate candidacy

Currently, the testing fee of $38.00 and the late registration fee of $15.00 are non-refundable. Fees are subject to change.

An attempt for the WST is completion of both test parts.
