General Information

In 1977, the Graduation Writing Assessment Requirement (GWAR) was implemented system-wide through all the CSU campuses to evaluate university level writing skills. Major changes to the WST are listed below (Please see WST Information webpage for more information)

For Undergraduate Students: All students must pass both the WST and 100W course in order to satisfy the GWAR. All students are required to complete the GWAR prior to graduation unless the requirement has been met through other approved provisions.

Registration for the WST requires completion of an English 1A course (GE Area A2) or second semester Humanities Honors Program course with a "C" or better. (A "C minus" not accepted.) or completion of Stretch English Courses with a "C" or better. It is strongly recommended the completion of a second semester composition course. (Area A3 courses for all other majors or English 1B for Engineering students only at SJSU.)

For Graduate Students: All graduate students are required to demonstrate competency in written English as a requirement for graduation. SJSU policy requires that English competency be a requirement for advancement to graduate candidacy

The testing fee of $38.00 and the late registration fee of $15.00 are non-refundable. Fees are subject to change.

Effective January 2015, under the recommendation of the Writing Requirements Committee and in order to help students advance towards graduation by speeding up the delivery of scores to SJSU students, San Jose State University will consist of an essay exam only.
