EPT/ELM Test Information
The Intent to Enroll Process at SJSU requires that students have taken the English Placement Test (EPT) or the Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) examination by the end of April or have been exempted from taking the tests (see below chart for explanation). Admission from SJSU will be withdrawn of a student chooses not to meet this requirement.
The English Placement Test (EPT). The EPT examination is designed to assess the level of reading and writing skills of undergraduate students so that they can be placed in the appropriate college level English composition courses. Those students who do not demonstrate college level skills will be directed to appropriate courses or programs. The EPT can only be taken once.
The Entry Level Mathematics (ELM). The ELM examination is designed to assess the skill levels of entering CSU students in the areas of elementary and intermediate algebra and plane geometry. Such skills generally are acquired in high school college prepartory courses. The ELM test can be taken more than once in order to attain a passing score.
These fees are non-refundable and are subject to change. Test fees are collected during registration and on the day of the test for stand-by candidates. Candidates will be turned away if they do not provide proof of registration or appropriate testing fees. All checks need to be made payable to the Educational Testing Service. Cash, credit cards, and debit cards are not accepted as payment on the day of the test.
