EPT/ELM Exemption Information

Qualifying test scores and/or college-level coursework may qualify students for an exemption from the EPT and/or ELM. Please make sure to submit official score reports to SJSU before the required deadlines in order to receive any exemption(s) that you qualify for.

Fully Ready (receives exemption)

Scores within the following range qualify as Fully Ready, and will receive an exemption as long as your official score reports are on file with SJSU (send score reports to Admissions):

Conditionally  Ready (may receive exemption if conditions are met)

A Conditionally Ready status (see chart below) indicates that an exemption may be possible. This is not an automatic exemption; you will only be exempt if official score reports are on file with SJSU (send all score reports to Admissions), and you fulfill all of the following conditions to upgrade your status from Condtionally Ready to Fully Ready: 

  • Pass approved senior year course(s) with a grade of C- or better (both Fall and Spring)

  • Fill out this Google form to verify your senior year coursework in progress. (deadline passed; updated link for 2018-19 admits will be posted Spring 2018)
  • Submit an official transcript to SJSU once final grades are posted. (by June 26, 2017)

Approved Senior Year Classes:

If you have a Conditionally Ready status, you can qualify for Fully Ready status and earn an exemption from the EPT and/or if you pass approved senior year courses with a C- or better (both Fall and Spring) and submit proof of final grades to SJSU by June 26, 2017:

English:

  • AP English, IB English, or Honors English
  • CSU Expository Reading and Writing (ERWC only counts towards EPT exemption if you have earned a conditionally ready status)

Math:

  • Any math course that has a minimum prerequisite of either Algebra II or Math III


IMPORTANT:

  • Conditionally Ready students that are not enrolled in an approved senior year course must take (and pass) the EPT and/or ELM by May 6, 2017, otherwise they will be placed into remediation and may be required to enroll in an Early Start course in that subject during the summer, prior to their first semester. 
  • Conditionally Ready students who do not show proof of passing an approved senior year course by June 26, 2017 will be placed into remediation during their first year and may be required to enroll in an Early Start course in that subject during the summer, prior to their first semester.
